The Palace Trust
The Bishop’s Palace is run by The Palace Trust, a small registered charity that is responsible for the upkeep, development and sustainable future of this historically important site. As well as preserving the Palace, our vision is to see it return to being a focal point of the local community, so that everyone who crosses the drawbridge can benefit from this beautiful, tranquil and inspirational place.

Funding needs
We rely on donations and income from ticket sales and events to run the Bishop’s Palace. Funding has been secured to help develop the site but we still need to raise urgent funds to support the day to day running costs of this historic site and ensure it remains open for future generations to enjoy.
It costs us approximately £1,600 a day to keep the Palace open to the public. On top of that we need to raise urgent funds to conserve the medieval building, maintain our 14 acres of grounds, and care for the many historically important treasures contained inside the Palace. In addition we need to raise funds to undertake new projects and develop existing activities such as our Learning and Outreach work with families, children and the local community.
Securing the future
You can play a vital role in securing the future of the Bishop’s Palace by considering how you can support the work of our charity. From making a donation, taking part in a fundraising event, to becoming a Guardian or leaving a gift in your Will, your contribution will make an important impact on our ability to preserve the past and plan for the future.
Make a donation
You can make donation of any size online through VirginMoney, or by sending a cheque, payable to The Palace Trust, to Joanna Hall, The Bishops Palace, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2PD. If there is a particular area of our work that you would like to support please do let us know. You can download a donation form here, which will allow you to make a gift aid declaration and we will receive an extra 25% from Government. You can also donate via your mobile phone – just text BISH12 and £10 to 70070 and a donation will be made directly to the Palace Trust.

Over the last two years we have been raising funds to transform the Bishop’s Palace. Thanks to the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Church Commissions, Viridor Credits and a number of private donors and Charitable Trusts, we have been able to commence work on improving the Palace and Gardens, creating a more welcoming, accessible and inspiring experience for all.
